Artistic career

In 2012 Stuart decided to focus on developing his wood carving skills. Since 2013 he began to apply paint to his carved works, inspired by traditional Aboriginal paintings and then placed in a contemporary context applying his own interpretation and style. Stuart’s work is influenced by stories his grandfather once told, and eventually passed down to Stuart by his Aunty.

“The women of my family taught me how to carve wood,” Stuart explains. He observed the craft since he was a young child, “It’s a family tradition, passed down. But an owl painting my aunty did inspired me to carve the owls.”

On Country

Stuart has been involved in traditional outdoor activities since childhood. This included including hunting birds (often fowl such as duck and goose) and would go through traditional customs to cook and eat what was caught.

Stuart McGrath also works for Larrakia Nation Aboriginal Corporation, helping those in need.
