Leanne Guymala is a master weaver, and cultural practitioner from the Kunwinjku community in Arnhem Land, Northern Territory. She is known for her involvement in the Barradj culture camp, where she shares her fibre art skills with young women, and she also contributes to the Kunmayali dja projects within the Kunwinjku region
Leanne Guymala is one of four sisters, all daughters of the artist Spider Namirrki and all are exceptional and well-known fibre artists. Leanne's mother was Molly Naborhlborhl. She makes a variety of coiled forms and experiments with combinations of techniques.
The sisters’ work, including one of Leanne’s wonderful baskets, was featured in the exhibition Twined Together and the book of the same name.
This bucket basket by Leanne Guymala has been coiled, with horizontal bands of undyed and dyed pandanus. In Gunbalanya bucket baskets are made to reflect the shape of an introduced metal or plastic pail or bucket.
