In her painting Kungkarangkalpa Maringka has depicted the Tjukurpa (story) of the Seven Sisters, who travel across the land launching themselves from the earth into the sky in attempt to escape the forbidden affection of a bad man named Niyru, who is in pursuit of the eldest sister. Maringka depicts this journey with great attention to detail and sensitivity towards colour and composition. She layers dots of concentrated colour over one another to build up areas that flow organically and creates an optical resonance that imbues the pictorial space with energy. Maringka paints to maintain this important Tjurkurpa, to pass on her knowledge and keep culture strong.
